Wines of the Night
2017 Tolaini “Al Passo” Toscana ($20)
The Tolaini 2017 Al Passo is always an ambitious wine that takes the best of the grapes in its blend: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Each give freshness, structure and textural fiber. Al Passo opens to dark berry fruit and plum, with spice, tobacco and tilled earth. This is a well-priced wine that promises lots of pairings, especially out of a Tuscan cookbook.
2016 Collazzi Toscana Rosso ($30)
Subtle aromas of forest floor, violet and pipe tobacco mingle with a balsamic whiff of camphor in this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The elegantly structured palate offers dried cherry, cassis and star anise before a coffee bean close. Polished, fine-grained tannins provide support.
2017 Felsina “Fontallero” Toscana ($45)
The flavors of cherry, strawberry and rose are pure, with a backbone of acidity and dense tannins for support. Iron and wild herb accents add depth as this red lingers, showing smoke and spice notes. Features a sense of urgency, driven by vivid acidity. The finish evokes energy.
