Wines of the Night
This grows in Uruguay’s coastal hills, where Alejandro Bulgheroni invested in planting more than 1,000 parcels of vines. Working with consulting oenologist Alberto Antonini, the team fermented this wine in cement vats, then aged it in stainless steel and oak uprights. It’s tannat in a bright, spicy, accessible style, with an underlying structure that’s slowly revealed with air. The dark, iron-like tannins gain power as it opens, lending the wine the weight for sautéed calf ’s liver with onions.
A nice illustration of the Vacqueyras appellation for the freshness and pureness of its fruit. It is characterized by an intense bouquet of small wild fruits, crushed strawberries and blueberries. In the mouth, it is well structured with an explosion of fruits. The finish shows hints of licorice.
2019 Athos Toscana Rosso ($45)
Dark purple color. Nose offers cherries and chocolate. Flavors remind me of chocolate covered cherries, with an initial sweet profile. Ripe fruit but there is some acidity that prevents it from being candied. Over time, the sweetness dissipates and the flavors move towards ripe black plum.
