Wines of the Night
2016 Domaine Lafage "Novellum" Chardonnay Pays d'Oc ($11)
A sensational wine that will compete with wines five times the price, the 2016 Novellum Chardonnay is the real deal and actually reminded me of a Chardonnay from Mark Aubert in California's Sonoma County. White peach, crushed rocks, spice and brioche notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that has depth, layered texture and length. Buy it.
Scores After Round #1
2014 Hartford Old Vine Zinfandel, Russian River Valley ($30)
The 2014 Zinfandel (Russian River Valley) is dark, juicy and flavorful, with plenty of acid kick to prop up the flavors, dark cherry, blackberry, spice and violets are pushed forward. Drink this delicious Zinfandel over the next few years.
Scores After Round #2
2016 Chateau de Vaudieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc “Clos Belvedere” ($65)
Made from 100% Grenache Blanc, the special cuvée 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Clos du Belvédère is more fresh and lively, with vibrant citrus, lime and salty minerality flowing to a medium-bodied, fresh, beautifully pure white that has high acidity, solid mid-palate density, and a clean finish. It's going to be even better this time next year. This is another great lineup from Chateau de Vaudieu, who have risen to the top of the heap recently. They make a perfumed, elegant style of wine, and have started releasing numerous single parcel wine from vines all located around the estate. While the 2016s are a clear step up, the 2015s has terrific purity and elegance.
Scores After Round #3
1998 Fratelli Revello Vigna Giachini ($80)
So much ripe fruit on the nose with loads of strawberries and milk chocolate. Dried mushroom too. Full bodied, with wonderfully velvety tannins and a long, long finish. I love the richness and flamboyant character.
