2015 Domaine Les Pins "Les Rochettes" Bourgueil ($20)
A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight to drink.
2004 Domaine Les Pins "Vielles Vignes" Bourgueil ($24)
Domaine les Pins is a small artisanal producer which oversees every stage of the production from start to finish themselves. They have roughly 30 hectares of Cabernet Franc spread out through the Bourgueil and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil regions. Vines of an average age of 25 years are planted in sandy, clay and gravel soils. After harvest, grapes are de-stemmed, sorted and put into tank for spontaneous fermentation to begin. After being pressed off and letting malolactic fermentation happen, the wine is put into concrete tank for at least 10 months prior to bottling.
1995 Joel Taluau "Vielles Vignes" Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil ($30)
Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St. Nicolas de Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire, unmarred by the intrusion of oak--which he hasn't used in production sincce 1986. He was also the first producer in the appellation to begin domaine bottling. The Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot of Cabernet Franc planted in 1934, is prized for its power, depth and grace. This flagship wine is meant to age, and the large format bottle will have helped to preserve freshness. Enjoy now!
