2015 Kirkland Rutherford Meritage Napa Valley ($13)
Kirkland wines are hit and miss at best but this one is closer to a hit than most. Nose shows brambles and some dark fruit but doesn't give up much else. On the palate there's some oak and a modest amount of fruit but things are in nice balance though the mid. Finish is straight down the middle with good acid and just enough tannin to keep everything together. Not exemplary but a good value at $16-17 especially from Rutherford.
Dark straw green color. Attractive aromas and flavors of toasted meringue, tropical fruit salad, and nougat with a supple, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a smooth, intriguing, medium-long spiced pineapple and nuts finish with fine, crunchy tannins and a suggestion of oak. A nicely restrained Russian River chardonnay that will shine at the table.
2014 Kirkland Signature Series Russian River Valley Chardonnay ($13)
2014 Kirkland Pauillac Bordeaux ($23)
The first thing to note is that this is a 2014 vintage, so it’s just a baby. Be sure to decant this one. Nose is signature old world Bordeaux, barnyard, a little vegetal, bell pepper. In the mouth, it’s a robust wine, thick and dry, tannic; flavors of black cherry and quite a bit of toasted oak on the back end; some spice and vanilla. Dry throughout, particularity on the finish.
