Sony Music Exec Wende Crowley & California Syrah
2013 Denner Dirt Worshipper, Paso Robles ($70)
As this wine unfolds, the nose is packed with seared blackberries, gardenia, olive tapenade, white pepper and spent campfire. The palate evolves from blue berries and violets to smoked meats and rolling tobacco – changing with every sip you take. The finish lingers like the still of a summer night, becoming denser, richer and more intense as it passes. 99% Syrah, 1% Roussanne. Aged for 16 months. 65% in once and twice used barriques, 25% in new French barriques and 10% in new Hungarian barriques.
The 2014 Luli Syrah fills the glass with rich and complex aromatics of blackberry, leather, clove with uplifting highlights of white pepper and violets. The color is a deep purple and the palate of this Syrah is layered with dense and powerful tannins. Being bold in flavor but also high in freshness and acidity create a Syrah combination that is great for drinking now with a nice meal or aging for many years in the cellar.
2014 Luli Syrah Santa Lucia Highlands ($19)
2013 Red Car Sonoma Coast Syrah ($30)
Deep ruby. Dark cherry and blackberry aromas are complicated by notes of cured meat, pipe tobacco and licorice. Deep cherry compote and chewing tobacco flavors show good depth and gain sweetness with air. Smoky herb and bitter cherry flavors dominate the focused, juicy finish, which featured fine-grained tannins.
