2014 Groth Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley ($20)
This wine was produced from grapes grown in various microclimates of the Napa Valley. The warmer Napa Valley microclimates give us grapes that result in wines with a lush, full melon/citrus character in the aroma and in the flavor. The cooler areas of Napa Valley provide fruit with a solid, crisp backbone that gives the wine an exciting liveliness that balances the rich creaminess from "sur lie" aging. Lighter fare such as scallops and stone fruit salads alongwith warm summer evenings always pair beautifully with this classic Sauvignon Blanc.
2013 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley ($40)
This appealing Sauvignon Blanc includes grapes from six diverse sites in Russian River Valley. The foundation is 53% Sauvignon Musqué, a highly floral and rich-bodied clone of the parent varietal. Adding weight and depth to the blend is the old vine portion, which contributes 40% to the blend from vines 25 to 35 years old. In the glass, the wine is mouthwatering, showing off floral notes of jasmine, orange blossoms and lemon verbena. This delicate perfume is complemented by rich citrus tones of lime zest, tangerine and mandarin orange. White peach and ripe pear along with tropical accents of pineapple, lycheé and guava round out the aromatic profile. A hint of minerality, along with a bit of exotic barrel spice -- cumin and coriander -- add even more intrigue.
2013 Favia Linea Sauvignon Blanc, Coombsville ($75)
The latest vintage of this homegrown white wine is pure pleasure, both hedonistically and intellectually. Now in its sixth year, the vineyard is standing on a solid foundation, its roots actively mining for water and nutrients. The vineyard was planted without irrigation, and being dry farmed, produces a small but intense crop. Meticulously attended to by our team, with strict adherence to organic and biodynamic principles, the fruit is pure and bright, resulting in an incredibly fresh and multilayered wine. The grapes are pressed whole-cluster, and the juice fermented in a combination of neutral barrels and stainless steel with just a touch of new oak. We prevent malo-lactic fermentation, in order to highlight the treasures that lie inside this noble variety. Aromas of grapefruit, citrus peel, and lemongrass rise up as the wine is poured. These same characteristics carry through on the palate, along with mouthwatering flavors of tropical fruits, hard candies, and freshly harvested stone fruits. This wine has ample acidity and backbone to age for a decade or more, but can be enjoyed immediately.
