2013 Le Boncie "Cinque" Rosso di Toscana ($25)

Giovanna Morganti is quickly becoming recognized asone of the best of the new generation of Tuscan winemakers. Her small estate is a mere three hectares and her only wine is called “Le Trame” (the intrigues) signifying the wheeling and dealing required to purchase the land. Giovanna's father was a legendary oenologist who believed in Tuscan varietals long before the “flying consultants” identified this area as a profit center. Podere Le Boncie is situated in the hamlet of San Felice which itself is located a handful of minutes north of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the southern tier of the Chianti Classico zone.

2009 Domaine de l'Horizon Rouge ($50)

A blend of 67% Grenache and 33% Carignan from vines that are 60 to 100 years old vines planted on schistic, calcareous marne and slate soils around Calce in Roussillon. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically. The grapes are partially whole bunch fermented, some in cement and the rest in oak, using indigenous yeasts. It is aged for about 12 months in a combination of puncheons and foudre. A deeply flavored, luscious wine, with brilliant complexity and length to the finish. Extraordinary wine of Roussillon. 550 cases produced.

Punta Aiquia Primitivo ($17)

This full and enveloping wine shows ethereal, fragrant and rich notes. It displays scents and nuances of cherries in brandy, mulberry jam, blueberry and blackcurrant, humus, tobacco and ginger, black pepper and herbs. It’s a warm and complex wine with a ighty personality, generous and vibrant, intense and concentrated, surprising while ageing. Perfect with bucatini in boar meat sauce, pappardelle in hare sauce, pork stew, tripe rolls, stuffed meat rolls with tomato sauce, and tuna stew with mint. Very good with medium-seasoned cheeses.

2012 Toro Victorino ($50)

Like its big brother Alabaster, this is a superb Tinta de Toro that's powerfully built but also stylish. Aromas of cassis and blackberry are dark, malty and chocolaty. Flavors of burnt toast, dark chocolate, black peppercorn and blackberry end with a tannic yet balanced swirl of licorice and minerally complexity. Drink from 2017–2030.
